The Isle of Man is a British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, neither an EU member nor part of the United Kingdom for tax purposes. With income tax of no more than 21% (capped at GBP 220,000 per person), no capital gains tax and no inheritance tax, the island is one of the most attractive jurisdictions in Europe for trusts, foundations and discreet wealth structures.
Why the Isle of Man for asset protection?
The Isle of Man has a mature trust law, based on English common law, that effectively protects assets against creditors, the consequences of divorce and state intervention. Manx trust law offers flexible ways to structure family wealth, company shares and international investments. The island is not part of the EU VAT system and is not fully subject to the European transparency directives.
The tax framework
The Isle of Man levies income tax of 10% (on the first GBP 6,500) and 21% (above that), with a personal cap of GBP 220,000 a year. No capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax. Corporation tax: 0% for most companies (exceptions: banks and property companies). The island has reported account data under the OECD CRS standard since 2017, but it is not an EU member.
Practical uses
Isle of Man structures are particularly suited to: holding British and international shareholdings, protecting family wealth through trusts with professional trustees, managing life insurance portfolios (the island is a leading centre for offshore life insurance), and as a basis for companies that operate in the British market without being fully subject to the UK tax system.
